The success story of Michael born deaf

Michael was born deaf. That means he can't hear anything or talk or read well. Yet he has always worked hard. At first, he worked for a long time at the social services, but he wanted to do something else.

International Day of the Deaf

Saturday, September 27, is World Deaf Day. A great time to highlight Michael's story. Indeed, despite his obstacles, Michael is working on his development. This is how he was able to get his mbo diploma after all.

Who is Michael?

Michael works at RSC Schiphol. This is a sorting company of reusable electronic devices. Because Michael can barely hear and talk, it is sometimes difficult for him. He has difficulty communicating with co-workers and previously never had the self-confidence to pursue training.

His employment agency, along with the fees from Doorzaam, changed that! Earlier he already obtained his VCA and forklift certificates. And now he also has an MBO-2 diploma!

"Michael can't actually hear anything, but is very sharp. On the forklift he sees everything. And I don't think he has ever run into anything," says his dispatcher Matthijs Knippen, of YourSelect.

Interview with Michael

Since Michael cannot communicate by voice, we briefly asked him some questions via computer. He was happy to cooperate with that.

What was the reason for you to apply for reimbursement from Lone?

"I signed up for this route for broader employability. Also related to the hard work, it's good to increase your chances in this."

What did you run into before you started your development?

"When I started here 5 years ago, I just wanted to work and nothing more. I was already happy just to have a job. I saw the group before this doing this training and thought: maybe it's something for me too. I can't talk well and read well and I thought maybe I can't do it. But Alissa (his supervisor, ed.) persuaded me to try it anyway and she indicated that I could do it."

What has this trajectory given you?

"I don't notice a lot of it right now because I'm still doing the same job, but you never know what the future holds."

What would you like to say to other temps?

"Work as hard as I do."
