How to recognize the signs of low literacy in colleagues

If a co-worker cannot properly read or understand safety instructions, it can create dangerous situations. Consider using machinery unsafely or not wearing the proper protection. Performing tasks without understanding exactly what to do can also cause mistakes.

It is also difficult socially. They may talk less during breaks or avoid contact because they are afraid of making mistakes or feel embarrassed. Even grocery shopping can become difficult.

Recognize the signs

The Reading and Writing Foundation focuses on preventing and reducing low literacy. To create awareness of this issue, the Foundation has created a list on how to recognize the signs of low literacy in those around you.

• Just looking at a text without moving the eyes over the text. 
• Do not use periods or commas. 
• Not having an e-mail address. 
• Having difficulty with mobile banking. 
• Have poorly legible handwriting. 
• Being unemployed often or for a long period of time. 
• Not growing further in the work. 
• Being an hour early or late to an appointment. 
• Negative talk about school experience. 
• Having difficulty with navigation. 
• Using excuses such as "forgot glasses" or "have sore hand" when asked to read or write something

What can you do?

Do you feel a colleague is having trouble with language? Discuss the issue in a respectful manner.
