Bij mij zit vandaag Demi. Ze is 26 jaar, komt uit Mijdrecht en werkt als processoperator aan de inpak- en sorteerlijn in een kunststof- en rubberfabriek. Vandaag gaan we het samen hebben over hoe je ondanks tijdsdruk toch veilig kunt werken. Want ja.. onder druk kun je de neiging hebben het soms toch ff anders te doen, maar hoe zorg je dan toch voor veiligheid? Demi, wat fijn dat je er bent.
Demi:
Haha ja eh… dank je wel. Leuk om te doen… maar eh… wel spannend hoor.
Host:
Dat snap ik helemaal. Neem vooral de tijd! Hé, vertel eens… wie ehm ben jij op de werkvloer? Hoe zouden collega’s jou omschrijven?
Demi:
Eh… ja… goeie. Ik denk… iemand die graag doorwerkt. Enne… ik hou van overzicht. En van… ja, een duidelijke routine, zeg maar.
Host:
Aha okeeeee, dat ehm dat klinkt goed. En hoe uit zich dat in de praktijk?
Demi:
Nou… ik ken mijn werkplek inmiddels best goed, hoor. Ik werk nu… eh… iets meer dan een jaar in de fabriek. En… ja… ik vind het nog steeds leuk, omdat… alles is nu gewoon bekend. Of nou ja—bekend genoeg. Ik—ik weet waar de gevaren zitten. Wanneer ik extra moet opletten. En eh… waar het… zeg maar… vastloopt soms. Waar de k-kne-knelpunten zitten snap je.
Host:
En qua veiligheid: hoe ehmm.. hoe kijk je daar op de werkvloer tegenaan?
Demi:
Ja uhm… veiligheid… ja, dat is… dat wordt er bij ons vanaf dag één echt erin geramd, zeg maar. PBM’s… slotjes… e-learnings… het vier-ogen-principe… je krijgt echt zóveel uitleg en begeleiding. En eh… zelfs als je… als je alleen maar bezoeker bent, moet je eerst een kleine veiligheidstest doen. Dus ja… ze nemen het wel serieus maar echt.
Host:
Ja, dat vier-ogen-principe en e-learnings… ik hoor dat vaker voorbijkomen. Maar het is eigenlijk heel mooi: je staat er nooit alleen voor. Voelde je je daardoor extra veilig?
Demi:
Ja… ja, zeker.
Host:
En tijdsdruk… heb je daar wel eens last van?
Demi:
Ja… op zich, soms wel. Maar ja… ik denk iedereen... toch?
Host:
Hmm, vertel. Hoe ehm hoe is dat bij jou?
Demi:
Nou ehhmm… een keer kregen we een extra grote order binnen. Echt zo’n last-minute ding. En… de planning zat al helemaal vol. En dan hoor je overal: “WE MOETEN TEMPO MAKE, NOG EFFE KNALLE” weetjewel.
Host:
Ah ja… en hoe wordt dat dan bij jullie aangepakt?
Demi:
Tsja… je voelt het meteen. Je wil… je wil alles super snel doen. Je hoofd schiet van hot naar her. En je wíl mee in dat tempo, want… ja… echt iedereen gaat door.
Host:
En dan... verandert je gedrag?
Demi:
Hehe ja… ik merkte dat ik… kleine stapjes ging overslaan. Om eigenlijk gewoon… ja... ehm tijd te winnen...? En ik wéét dat het niet moet, hè. Maar… ja… je voelt die ehm... die druk ofzo.
Host:
Zoals... wat voor stapjes bedoel je dan...?
Demi:
Nou… uhm… bijvoorbeeld het schoonmaken van de lijn. Daar gaat best veel tijd in zitten. We hebben… eh… in totaal zo’n 75 minuten voor alles. Dus uittrekken, spoelen, middelen erop, naspoelen… alles weer terug. En ja… dat is gewoon… best een flinke klus. Vroeger zat daar… volgens mij.... sowieso niet zo strak tijd op.... En nu heb je elke dag zo’n DOEL dat je moet halen.
Host:
Enne… gaat dat überhaupt?
Demi:
Hmm ja soms nét. Maar heeeeeel eerlijk: vaak ook ECHT niet. En dan hoor je dat... dat stemmetje: “Kom op, doorwerken.” En dan denk je ineens: “Dat checklistje? Doe ik zo wel.” Of: “Dat slotje? Ah joh ik ben zo terug.” En ja… dat... dat is opzich best gevaarlijk. Dat weet ik.
Host:
Ja, ik begrijp je gedachte, tijdsdruk doet toch altijd iets met mensen. En heb je dan ook een moment gehad waarop je dacht: dit was eigenlijk niet oké?
Demi:
Oh ja… Sowieso... Bij ehmmmm de LoToTo.
Host:
De.... Lototo...????
Demi:
Ja van ehmmm... die die slotjes dus. Als je ergens in een machine werkt, dan... dan moet dat slot erop, zodat niemand de lijn zomaar start. Maar onder druk denk je soms... dan ja dan denk je van... “Joh, ik ben zo klaar. Ik zet het er zo wel op.”
Host:
Ennn… is het ooit misgegaan? Misschien niet per se bij jou, maar ehm in het team..?
Demi:
Ja… helaas wel. Een collega stond nog in de lijn. En ja.. hij had ehm hij het het slotje er niet opgedaan. Iemand anders—die niet wist dat hij er nog stond—drukte op start. En ja… dan gaat die lijn gewoon lopen.
Host:
Oei.. En toen?
Demi:
Ja… hij ehmmm hij kwam bekneld te zitten tussen de machine. Dat was echt…ZO naar, dat was heel heftig. Iedereen schrok. Gelukkig trok iemand op tijd aan ehmmm aan de de noodlijn. Hij hield er gelukkig “alleen” een hersenschudding aan over… maar het had echt pffff… echt veeeeel veel erger kunnen zijn.
Host:
Jeetje… dat hakt erin. Hoe was dat voor jou?
Demi:
Ja wel echt heftig… dat was wel even schrikken ja. Ja, je je denkt daarna steeds zo van: het was één ding. Eén slot. En het had alles kunnen voorkomen Sindsdien… ja… doe ik dat dus nooit meer anders. Echt nooit.
Host:
Oh wauw, dat klinkt als een echt keerpunt...!
Demi:
Jaa, zeker. We hebben nu allemaal ons eigen slot. Niemand kan dat eraf halen behalve jijzelf. Ennnehm bij ehm bij een ploegwissel… dan dan geef je het sleuteltje echt bewust door aan de volgende zeg maar. Dat maakt het… ja.. gewoon veiliger ofzo...?
Host:
En buiten die slotjes… waar merkte je nog meer dat tijdsdruk invloed had eigenlijk...?
Demi:
Nouuuuu uhm… vooooral als ik iemand moest inwerken. Daar krijgen we eigenlijk niet meer tijd voor. Je legt dingen uit… je kijkt mee… maar ondertussen lopen je eigen lijnen ook gewoon door. En dan… ja… dan zit je hoofd zó vol. En dan vergeet je… ja, kleine dingen. De dingen die je ehm ja die je normaal gewoon automatisch doet.
Host:
Tja, ja.… dat begrijp ik. Dat is menselijk.
Demi:
Ja… ja... precies. Maar ja, onveilig is het wel.
Host:
Hm ja... Heb je... nog zo'n moment gehad?
Demi:
Hehe Ja… bij de a gee vees. Dat zijn die robots die door de fabriek rijden. Ze gaan zó langzaam. En dan denk je: “ik kan er wel even voorlangs.” Ook al weet je… dat het niet mag. Maar ja... je raadt het al.. dat ehm ja dat deed ik dus een keertje. En toen kwam er ineens eentje uit een blinde hoek. Ooh joh… mijn hart sloeg echt over.
Host:
Ah nee getsie… wat eng lijkt me dat.
Demi:
Jaaaa... Collega’s zeiden ook echt streng: “Demi… echt nooit meer doen.” En ja.. ze hadden gelijk natuurlijk.
Host:
Ja, dit is precies wat tijdsdruk doet hè: het laat slimme mensen domme risico’s nemen.
Demi:
Jaaaaa jaa jaa en daarom moet je elkaar ook aanspreken. Dus.. ik ja ik ehh ik was blij dat ze.. dat ze dat ook deden hoor. Enne op een…wel op een vriendelijke manier. Maar wel duidelijk ja.
Host:
Hoe ehm blijf jij nu dan veilig werken, juist met tijdsdruk?
Demi:
Nou uhmmmm even denken, uhm ik... ik leg sowieso alles klaar voordat ik begin. Dat klinkt misschien heel basic, maar… het helpt echt. Mijn PBM's zitten altijd in dezelfde zak — bril, handschoenen, dat soort dingen. Dan hoef ik tenminste niet te zoeken als het druk is. Enne.. ik loop mijn checklist eigenlijk hardop door. Ja, dat voelt soms een beetje raar hoor, zeker als er mensen bij staan. En als het echt te druk wordt… dan eh… probeer ik om hulp te vragen. Dat vond ik eerst echt lastig. Maar ja… beter dan dat je fouten gaat maken hè.
Host:
Wauw, wat goed. Routine is echt een krachtig hulpmiddel dus!
Demi:
Ja en eh… als ik iets mag meegeven: gewoon… blijf met elkaar praten. Klinkt simpel, maar dat is het soms niet hè. En als iets niet goed voelt… zeg het gewoon. Ook al voelt dat ongemakkelijk. Want ja… liever even ongemakkelijk ofzo dan dat er iets misgaat...

Today we're going to talk about how you can still work safely despite time pressure. Because yes... under pressure you can be tempted to do things a little differently sometimes, buuuut how do you still ensure safety? Demi, so glad you're here.
Demi:
Haha yeah eh… thank you. Nice to do… but eh… still a bit nerve-wracking though.
Host:
I completely understand that. Take your time! Hey, but tell me… who ehm are you on the work floor? How would colleagues describe you!?
Demi:
Eh… yeah… good question. I think… someone who likes to get things done. And… I like having an overview. And… yeah, a clear routine, you know.
Host:
Aha okaaaay, that ehm that sounds good. And how does that show in practice?
Demi:
Wellllll… ehmmm I know my workplace pretty well by now, you know. I've been working at the factory for… eh… just over a year. And… yeah… I still enjoy it, because… everything is just familiar now. Or well—familiar enough. I—I know where the hazards are. When I need to pay extra attention. And eh… where it… you know… sometimes gets stuck. Where the b-bo-bottlenecks are, you know.
Host:
And when it comes to safety: how ehm.. how do you look at that on the work floor?
Demi:
Yeah uhm… safety… yeah, that's… that gets really drilled into you from day one, you know. PPE's… lockouts… e-learnings… the four-eyes principle… you really get SO much explanation and guidance. And eh… even if you're… if you're just a visitor, you have to do a small safety test first. So yeah… they really do take it seriously.
Host:
Yeah, that four-eyes principle and e-learnings… I hear those come up more often. But it's actually really nice: you're never on your own. Did that make you feel extra safe?
Demi:
Yeah… yeah, definitely.
Host:
And time pressure… do you ever struggle with that?
Demi:
Yeah… sometimes, yeah. But yeah… I think everyone does right?
Host:
Hmm, tell me. How ehm how is that for you?
Demi:
Well ehhmm… one time we got a really big order come in. Really one of those last-minute things. And… the schedule was already completely packed. And then you hear it everywhere: "WE NEED TO PICK UP THE PACE, COME ON LET'S PUSH THROUGH" you know??
Host:
Ah yeah… and how is that handled at your workplace?
Demi:
Well… you feel it immediately (at least I do). You want… you want to do everything super super fast. Your head is ALL over the place. And you WANT to match that pace, because… yeah… everyone just yeah... everyone just keeeeeps going.
Host:
And then... your behaviour changes?
Demi:
Hehe yeah… I noticed that I… started skipping small steps. To basically just… yeah... ehm save time...? And I KNOW you're not supposed to, right. But… yeah… you feel that ehm... that pressure somehow.
Host:
Like... what kind of steps do you mean...?
Demi:
Well… uhm… for example cleaning the line. That takes quite a lot of time. We have… eh… about 75 minutes total for everything. So draining, flushing, applying products, rinsing again… everything back in place. And yeah… that's just… quite a big job. Before, there… I think.... there definitely wasn't such a tight time on it.... And now every day you have this GOAL you have to hit.
Host:
Annd… is that even doable?
Demi:
Hmm yeah sometimes just barely. But VERY honestly: often really NOT. And then you hear that... that little voice: "Come on, keep going." And then you suddenly think: "That checklist? I'll do it in a sec." Or: "That lock? Ah come on I'll be right back." And yeah… that... that is actually pretty dangerous. I know that.
Host:
Yeah, I understand your thinking, time pressure always does something to people. And have you had a moment where you thought: this actually wasn't okay?
Demi:
Oh yeah… Definitely... With ehmmmm the LoToTo.
Host:
Theeeeee Lototo...????
Demi:
Yeah from ehmmm... those locks you know. When you're working inside a machine, then... then that lock has to go on, so nobody just starts the line. Buuuuuut under under pressure you sometimes think... then yeah then you think… "Ah, I'll be done in a sec. I'll put it on in a moment."
Host:
Annd… did it ever go wrong? Maybe not necessarily with you, but ehm in the team..?
Demi:
Yeah… unfortunately it did. A colleague was still inside the line. And yeah.. he had ehm he hadn't hadn't put the lock on. Someone else—who didn't know he was still in there—pressed start. And yeah… the line just starts running.
Host:
Oh no.. And then...?
Demi:
Yeah… he ehmmm he got caught between the machine. That was really… SO awful , that was really intense. Everyone was shocked. Luckily someone pulled the ehmmm the emergency cord in time. He luckily "only" got a concussion… but it could have really pffff… really been sooooo much worse.
Host:
Wow… that really hits hard. How was that for you?
Demi:
Yeah it was really intense… that was quite a shock yeah. Yeah, you keep thinking afterwards like: it was one thing. One lock. And it could have prevented everything. Since then… yeah… I never do that differently anymore. Really never.
Host:
Wow, that sounds like a real turning point...!
Demi:
Yaaa, definitely. We now all have our own lock. Nobody can take it off except yourself. Andddehm with ehm a shift handover… then then you consciously hand over the key to the next person, you know. That makes it… yeah.. just safer somehow...?
Host:
And beyond those locks… where else did you notice that time pressure had an effect actually...?
Demi:
Welllll uhm… esssspecially when I had to train someone. We basically don't get any extra time for that. You explain things… you check in… but meanwhile your own lines are still running. And then… yeah… your head is just SO full. And then you forget… yeah, small things. The things that you ehm yeah the things you normally just do automatically.
Host:
Yeah, I understand that. That's human.
Demi:
Yeah… yeah... exactly. But yeah, it is unsafe.
Host:
Hm yeah... Have you... had a moment like that?
Demi:
Hehe Yeah… with the A G Vs. Those are the robots that drive through the factory. They go SO slowly. And then you think: "I can just go in front of it for a sec." Even though you know… you're not supposed to. But yeah... you guessed it.. that ehm yeah I did that once. And then suddenly one came out of a blind corner. Oh man… my heart literally skipped a beat.
Host:
Oh no that sounds so scary.
Demi:
Yeah... Colleagues also said really firmly: "Really NEVER do that again." And yeah.. they were right of course.
Host:
Yeah, this is exactly what time pressure does right: it makes smart people take dumb risks.
Demi:
Yeah indeed! And that's why you have to call each other out. So.. I yeah I ehh I was glad that they.. that they did do that huh. And in a… well in a friendly way. But still clear yeah.
Host:
How ehm do you now keep working safely, especially under time pressure?
Demi:
Well uhmmmm let me think, uhm I... I always lay everything out before I start. That might sound really basic, but… it really helps. My PPE is always in the same pocket — goggles, gloves, that sort of thing. Then at least I don't have to search when it's busy. Anddd.. I actually go through my checklist out loud. Yeah, that sometimes feels a bit weird, especially when people are around. And if it really gets too busy… then eh… I try to ask for help. I used to find that really difficult. But yeah… better than making mistakes right.

Oh, wow, that's very good. I can imagine that routine really is a powerful tool then!
Demi:
Yeah and eh… if I can give one thing along: just… keep talking to each other. Sounds simple, but it sometimes isn't right. And if something doesn't feel right… just say it. Even if it feels uncomfortable. Because yeah… better a moment of discomfort than something going wrong...

Dobre pytanie. Myślę, że ktoś, kto lubi doprowadzać rzeczy do końca. Lubię mieć ogólny ogląd sytuacji i wyraźną rutynę.

Aha, to brzmi dobrze. A jak to wygląda w praktyce?
Demi
Całkiem dobrze znam już swoje stanowisko pracy. Pracuję w tej fabryce od ponad roku i nadal mi się podoba, bo wszystko jest już znajome, a przynajmniej wystarczająco znajome. Wiem, gdzie są zagrożenia, kiedy muszę być szczególnie uważna, i gdzie czasem się zacina, gdzie są wąskie gardła.

A jeśli chodzi o bezpieczeństwo: jak na to patrzysz na hali produkcyjnej?
Demi
Bezpieczeństwo jest wpajane od pierwszego dnia. Środki ochrony osobistej, blokady, e-learningi, zasada czterech oczu — naprawdę dostajesz wiele wyjaśnień i wsparcia. Nawet jeśli jesteś tylko gościem, najpierw musisz zrobić mały test bezpieczeństwa. Naprawdę traktują to poważnie.

Tak, czasem. Myślę, że każdy tak ma.

Kiedyś przyszło naprawdę duże zamówienie na ostatnią chwilę, a harmonogram był kompletnie zapchany. Wtedy słyszysz wszędzie: "MUSIMY PRZYSPIESZYĆ, NO DALEJ, DO ROBOTY".

Czujesz to natychmiast. Chcesz wszystko robić super szybko i dotrzymać tempa, bo wszyscy po prostu idą naprzód.

Tak, zauważyłam, że zaczęłam pomijać małe kroki, żeby zaoszczędzić czas. Wiem, że nie powinnam, ale czujesz presję.

Na przykład czyszczenie linii. To zajmuje około 75 minut łącznie na wszystko: opróżnianie, płukanie, nakładanie preparatów, ponowne płukanie, wszystko z powrotem na miejsce. Teraz każdego dnia masz cel, który musisz osiągnąć.

Czasem ledwo, a często naprawdę nie. Wtedy słyszysz głosik: "No dalej, idź dalej" i odkładasz np. listę kontrolną albo zamek. To jest niebezpieczne, wiem o tym.

A czy miałaś kiedyś moment, w którym pomyślałaś, że to nie było okej?
Demi
Tak, LoToTo, czyli zamki bezpieczeństwa. Kiedy pracujesz wewnątrz maszyny, trzeba założyć zamek, żeby nikt nie uruchomił linii. Pod presją czasem myślisz: "Aaa, zaraz skończę. Zaraz go założę."

Czy coś poszło nie tak?
Demi
Niestety tak. Kolega był w środku linii, nie założył zamka, ktoś inny nacisnął start, linia ruszyła. Kolega wpadł między maszynę. Na szczęście ktoś pociągnął sznur alarmowy w porę. On dostał tylko wstrząśnienia mózgu, ale mogło być o wiele gorzej.
