The minimum wage will increase on January 1, 2026. For many temporary workers, this means you will earn a little more.
The minimum wage will increase by approximately 2.1%. If you are 21 years of age or older, the minimum hourly wage will be approximately €14.71 gross per hour. How much you will receive net depends on the number of hours you work and on taxes and allowances.
Purchasing power: what do you notice about it?
Purchasing power in 2026 will change due to a combination of higher wages and costs that are rising less rapidly than in previous years.
- Prices are rising less rapidly on average than in recent years.
- Wages continue to rise
- For many people, purchasing power is increasing by an average of 1.3%.
This does not mean that everything will become cheaper, but it does mean that the pressure on your wallet may be slightly less than before.
Groceries and daily expenses
Many people find that groceries and fixed expenses still feel expensive. In 2026, prices will continue to rise, but less sharply than in previous years.
Expenses for groceries, energy, and healthcare continue to take up a large portion of the monthly budget. It therefore helps to keep track of your expenses and make conscious choices. Tip: keep track of your fixed expenses in an app to get an overview.
Benefits in 2026: what will change?
Do you receive benefits? Then it is good to know that there will be a number of changes to healthcare benefits and housing benefits in 2026.
Healthcare allowance: maximum amount decreases
In 2026, the maximum amounts of healthcare allowance will decrease. The income limits will be slightly more generous, but especially for lower incomes, the amount may be lower than in 2025.
- If you live alone, you will receive approximately €2 less per month.
- For multi-person households, the maximum healthcare allowance will decrease by €4 per month.
This means that you may receive slightly less healthcare allowance, even if your income remains the same.
Rent allowance: more people can receive allowance
The rules for rent allowance will change in 2026. Access will be broadened, allowing more tenants to be eligible for rent allowance.
Until 2025, there was a fixed maximum rent limit. If your rent was higher than this, you would usually not receive rent allowance. From 2026 onwards, this strict maximum rent limit will be abolished.
That means:
- You may also be entitled to rent allowance even if your rent is higher.
- You must meet the income and asset requirements.
The calculation remains based on a maximum notional rent:
- Maximum calculated rent in 2026: €932.93
- For young people up to 21 years of age: €498.20
Do you have a lower rent? Then your actual rent will be used for the calculation.
Additional changes for young people
- The age limit for the lower rent threshold is being lowered from 23 to 21 years of age.
- Young people aged 21 and 22 may therefore receive more rent allowance sooner.
Service charges no longer count
From 2026 onwards, service charges will no longer be included in the calculation of housing benefit. Only the basic rent will be taken into account.
