Safer at work: what you as a temporary worker can learn from the latest figures
In 2024, temporary workers were more often involved in workplace accidents than permanent employees. These accidents often resulted in injuries and sometimes had lasting consequences. This is evident from the latest Workplace Accident Monitor 2024 published by the Dutch Labor Inspectorate. That is why it is important that you know how to work safely and that you are well prepared for risks in the workplace. In this article, we explain what these figures mean and what steps you can take to reduce the risks.

The figures show, among other things:
- Temporary workers are at a relatively higher risk of occupational accidents.
- Things regularly go wrong, especially in sectors such as industry, logistics, construction, and engineering.
- Many accidents occur during the first few weeks at a new workplace.
- Insufficient experience, lack of explanation, or time pressure often play a major role in accidents.
- Many accidents could be prevented with better explanation or preparation.
Why are the risks higher for temporary workers?
The Labor Inspectorate cites several reasons why temporary workers are more likely to find themselves in risky situations:
New workplace? New risks.
As a temporary worker, you regularly work at different locations. Each workplace has its own rules, machines, and processes. You constantly have to learn how everything works.
Less time for explanations
During busy periods, work is done more quickly and there is sometimes little time for proper instruction.
Fast pace
Many temporary workers work in fast-paced sectors. The rush increases the likelihood of mistakes being made.
You don't always dare to say anything
Because you are working temporarily, it can be more difficult to ask questions or indicate that something does not feel safe.
Unfamiliar with the risks
In the first few weeks, you are less likely to recognize dangerous situations. That makes this period extra important for your safety.
What can you do yourself to work more safely?
Here are some tips you can follow:
Request for clear explanation
Not sure how to do something? Ask. Ask for explanations about risks, machines, and protective equipment.
Share your experience
Tell them what you have and haven't done. That way, your manager will be well informed and can take this into account.
Be extra careful during the first few weeks
The Labor Inspectorate has observed that new employees are particularly at risk. Take your time. Work calmly and ask questions.
Report unsafe situations
Even if you've only just started working there.
Know where to go
Even if you work for a client, your temporary employment agency remains responsible for your safety. If you have any doubts, contact your temporary employment agency.
Do you recognize this at your workplace?
Do you work in logistics, manufacturing, industry, construction, or engineering? Then you often have to deal with machines, fast-paced environments, and physical tasks, which means you face more risks.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Do I know exactly how to perform my task safely?
- Have I been informed about the risks?
- Do I know what to do in case of danger?
- Do I dare ask my manager or temp agency something?
If you have any doubts about any of these questions, it is important to discuss this immediately.
