Week of Work Happiness: here's how you tackle it

This week is the Week of Work Happiness (October 6 to 10). All over the Netherlands there is extra attention for pleasure and happiness at work. Because happiness at work is not only about your salary or your hours, but especially about how you feel during your working day. Whether you work in healthcare, construction, warehousing or behind a desk: if you can do your job with a good feeling, it makes a big difference.

What is work happiness anyway?

Work happiness means that you enjoy your work and are energized by what you do. It's not about always smiling or never having a bad day. That's not realistic for anyone. Work happiness is about balance: do you generally feel fine, motivated and connected to your work and colleagues?

When you are happy in your work, you notice it:

  • You have more energy even after work.
  • You can handle stress and challenges better.
  • You are proud of what you do.
  • You pick up and learn new things faster.
  • You can collaborate more easily with colleagues

So work happiness is not only good for you, but also for your colleagues!

Why is work happiness important?

Feeling happy in your work has a positive impact on your health, your motivation, your performance and your life outside of work. Various studies, such as the recent TNO study, show that people who enjoy their work:

  • Being sick less often.
  • Being more productive.
  • Working longer.

And that makes sense. If your work mostly takes energy, you have less left over for home, friends or hobbies. But if your work actually gives you energy, you have more room and desire to do fun things outside of work.

Tips for increased work happiness

"Work happiness sounds nice, but how do I get happier at work?"

The good news is that you can influence your own job happiness. Small steps can already make a big difference.

Five practical tips:

1. Think about what energizes you

Consider this: at what moments during your work do you feel good? Are they the conversations with colleagues, completing a task or learning something new? Write this down for yourself. That way you will discover what you want to do more of.

2. Talk about it

Discuss with your colleague or manager what is important to you. Often small adjustments are already possible, such as different working hours, clear agreements or a task that suits you better.

3. Learn something new

Learning new things gives self-confidence and pleasure. It doesn't have to be a big education right away. Even a short course or training can help you make your work more fun and easier.

4. Take good care of yourself

Take enough breaks, exercise regularly and make sure you do things besides work that calm you down. That can be exercising, but also walking, cooking or spending time with friends or family.

5. Celebrate small successes

Take a moment to reflect on what you did well. The completion of a job, a nice conversation with a colleague, or just the feeling that you worked well. Moments like these help you feel positive.

"Every day felt the same and that made me unhappy. Now I enjoy going to work every day again!"

  • What makes me happy in my work?
  • What would I like to do differently?
  • What small step can I take today to make my work more enjoyable?

Maybe that's a conversation with your supervisor, taking a short training course or simply taking more moments of rest. Whatever your situation: by reflecting on your job happiness, you are already taking an important step.
